In 2022 Ecuador commemorated the 50th anniversary of the beginning of oil extraction from the ecuadorean Amazon. In 1972 the first oil barrel
traveled from Lago Agrio, in the Amazonía, to Balao, in the Coast. This was the beginning of Ecuadorian contemporary history, dramatically traversed by oil exploitation: ecological damage, periods of economic wellbeing followed by others of severe crisis, and dramatic migratory waves. Estado Fósil is a critical approach to the relation of oil and these last 50 years of Ecuadorian history. As an hyperoject, the existence of oil exceeds the conflicts in the Amazonía or its contribution to the local economy, therefore, we explore multiple realities affected by this resource. The project is divided in three sections: Materia, Conflictos and Imaginarios, through which we present contemporary art, photographic archives, documentaries, and essays.
